20 Ways To Avoid Overeating This Thanksgiving…
Thanksgiving means family getting together. Family getting together means family party. Family party means food! We all know what time of the year it is, the time to get your loose pants on. Some people look forward to it and some people dread it. Regardless of which person you are, most of the time you end up overeating. To eat a grand turkey-filled meal once every year and feel guilty for an entire month after – that’s the norm. But it’s time to break the norm.
We’ve researched and collected a few tips to help everyone avoid overeating during this year’s Thanksgiving. I mean sure the food in front of you may look just too tempting to resist but just think of all that guilt that you’ll feel after. Use these tips to have a guilt-free holiday.
#1. Drink LOTS of water, as it'll help fill you up (and has zero calories).
#2. Start a regular exercise routine before the holidays and keep to it after the holidays are over, especially after the holidays are over.
#3. Don't torture yourself while waiting for that big Thanksgiving meal, eat your meals and snack on little things throughout the day.
#4. Bring a game to the party if the only agenda for the holiday gathering is to eat - otherwise you might end up overeating out of boredom.
#5. Bring Tupperware of your own to take home leftovers! Hopefully this will help ease your mind of eating as much as you can since you know you will still have it to enjoy later.
#6. Pretend you have a special event you’re attending you need to look good at shortly after Thanksgiving, this will help you stay cautious about what you put on your plate.
#7. Don’t think of Thanksgiving as a “special” meal, think of it as any other ordinary meal. This way, we don’t feel like we're excused from eating healthy that day.
#8. Eat your protein and veggies first! Then all the unhealthy stuff can come last. So that when it’s time to eat the empty calorie foods, you consume less because you’re already starting to get full.
#9. You're most likely putting more food on your plate than you can actually eat. Don't let your eyes eat for you, keep to small portions.
#10. Skip the dips, spreads and dressings!
#11. Limit yourself on alcohol intake, it's all empty calories!
#12. Chat with other guests while eating your meal to prevent gobbling it up all at once.
#13. Put your utensils down after each bite and eat slowly. Try to chew each bite you take about 5-10 times to help prevent seconds.
#14. IF you're still hungry after your first serving, wait 20-30 minutes before going for seconds It takes around this long for the mind to tell the stomach that you are full, so it’ll be more likely you won’t want seconds anymore.
#15. Plan or organize a physical group activity after dinner to help burn off all the calories you just consumed!
#16. If you’re hosting the dinner this year, serve the main courses on the main table and place all the most unhealthy dishes on a side table.
#17. Use small table-spoon serving spoons instead of serving tongs.
#18. If you're a host, try providing only one dessert! If you're a guest, try sticking to just one desert (and one serving)!
#19. Tell a funny story and share some jokes with other guests, especially if you feel your sweet tooth kicking in! You can’t continue eating if you’re busy laughing. And you’re also working your ab muscles while you’re at it!
#20. Thanksgiving is finally over and you still have leftovers. Eat ONLY the healthy leftovers and throw everything else away.
