Lauren Kelly on Diet & Exercise
Diet and exercise can work together to promote weight loss, but it is key to remember a few points in order to yield the best results.
1. Even if you improve upon your exercise routine, if you don’t change your dietary habits, your weight will likely stay the same. Studies show that cutting calories in your diet is most important in terms of weight loss; it is also much easier to cut 500 calories out of your daily food intake as opposed to burning 500 extra calories through exercise. However, exercise is crucial in building lean body mass that burns more calories than fat mass, and it makes you feel pretty good mentally too!
2. Cut out the sugary beverages, and reduce the artificially sweetened ones as well. Research shows that if you drink 1 12oz can of soda daily and cut that out alone, you can lose 2 or more pounds weekly, or 10 or more pounds that month! If you drink soda and other sugary beverages like juice or iced tea throughout the day, replace them with water, flavored seltzer, or even un-sweetened tea to help reach your weight loss goals. Studies also show that drinking artificially sweetened beverages may actually harm your weight loss mission, because your body does not experience the sweet flavor it is in search for and, as a result, you eat more.
3. Make the most your of your workout. After exercise, build your muscle by eating food that is a good source of leucine. Leucine is an amino acid that helps build muscle and promotes fat loss! This protein is rich in whey protein isolate (found as a protein powder), beef, salmon, chicken, almonds and legumes.
